Five gobsmackingly fast cars made by the Volkswagen Group

We all know that VW Group make some great everyday cars. There are award-winning SUVs like the SEAT Arona, evergreen saloons like the Skoda Octavia and top-rated city cars like the Volkswagen Up! So it’s easy to forget that the VW Group also makes some of the fastest production cars on the planet.

We’re talking about cars that push your eyeballs back in your head, rearrange your internal organs and make hot hatches look like milk floats.

Below, we’ve gathered together four VW Group rocket-ships from four of its marques: Lamborghini, Porsche, Bugatti and Audi. We’ve added Car and Driver magazine’s official 0-60 times for the cars. And because you really need to see these monsters in action, we’ve tracked down video footage of just what they can do.

Let’s get started…

1. Lamborghini Huracan Performante

The Lambo’s naturally-aspirated 5.2 litre, V10 engine produces 630 BHP and 442 ft lbs of torque. Now, obviously, that’s beyond huge, but still nowhere near the numbers being generated by hypercars like La Ferrari or the McClaren P1. And yet the Huracan Performante has posted a hypercar-munching 6 min 52 at the Nuburgring. How on Earth did they manage that?

Car and Driver has clocked the Huracan’s 0-60 time at just 2.4 seconds. And that’s not hard to believe when you watch it destroy a 800 BHP Ferrari F12 in the clip below (see 1:45 to 2:15).

2. Porsche 911 Turbo S (991 Mk II)

At just 3.8 litres, the 2017 Turbo S has the smallest displacement engine on our list. It’s also got the least power, only managing a piddling 572 BHP. But thanks to the magicians at Porsche, that’s sufficient to set a blistering 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds.

Take a look at it in action against another stupendously fast car — the Lamborghini Aventador S (you’ll need 2:10 to 2:30, unless you’re working on your Portuguese).

3. Bugatti Chiron

Successor to the legendary Veyron, the Chiron is acknowledged to be several more steps up the evolutionary ladder and a real showcase for what VW Group can achieve. The numbers are jaw-dropping:

  • An 8 litre, quad-turbo engine
  • 1,479 BHP
  • 1180 ft lb of torque

The Chiron’s 0-60 time is 2.4 seconds (manufacturer’s figures this time, not Car and Driver’s), making it comparable to the Porsche and the Lambo. But what sets it apart is that it just keeps going. You’ll see what we mean in the video.

400 kph, by the way, is 249 mph. At that speed, you could drive from Bristol to Glasgow in 90 minutes.

4. Audi R8 V10 Plus

According to Car and Driver, the 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus reaches 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. That’s thanks to the 5.2 litre engine channeling 602 BHP through a Quattro four wheel drive. But what does that actually feel like?

Well, when we’ve got a spare £130K or so sloshing around, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, we love this video of the R8 V10 Plus on the Autobahn. Check out the acceleration from 4:25 – 5:00, especially where he flashes past a lorry. Then skip to 9:30 – 9:38, where he hits 207 mph.
